Tal Naim Cohen, a representative from the Israeli embassy in Washington, confirmed that the two staff members were shot “at close range” overnight.

It took place near the Capital Jewish Museum which sits just steps away from an FBI office.

Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, described the attack as “a depraved act of antisemitic terrorism”.

He wrote on X: “We are confident that the US authorities will take strong action against those responsible for this criminal act.”

Washington DC’s police chief, Pamela Smith, told a reporters at a news conference that a lone suspect is in custody.

Smith confirmed they had shouted “free, free Palestine” when being arrested.

The male shooter was reportedly seen walking around the museum before approaching the couple and two others.

A handgun is believed to have been used in the attack.

Terrified witnesses said they rushed over once hearing the gunshots but were initially unsure on who was injured.

Some even went to help the shooter who had entered the building looking in some distress.

The identity of the shooter is still unknown with cops yet to establish a motive.

Initial enquiries suggest the detained suspect is 20-year-old Elias Rodriguez from Chicago.

US President Donald Trump took to Truth Social shortly after the shooting to pay his respects to the couple.

He said: “These horrible D.C. killings, based obviously on antisemitism, must end, NOW!

“Hatred and Radicalism have no place in the USA.

“Condolences to the families of the victims. So sad that such things as this can happen! God Bless You ALL!”

Homeland Secretary Kristi Noem later described the attack as “senseless” – and vowed to “bring this depraved perpetrator to justice”.

As Israel’s president, Isaac Herzog, said he was “devastated”.
