The pursuit of a suspected carjacker, which began in Fontana and spanned across to Los Angeles, concluded dramatically in Lynwood when authorities utilized a K-9 unit to apprehend the individual on Friday afternoon.
According to law enforcement, the vehicle in question—a white pickup truck—was reportedly taken from the China Cook restaurant located in Fontana.
During the chase, the suspect was observed driving dangerously, occasionally venturing onto the wrong side of the road and navigating through heavily trafficked areas. Eyewitnesses noted the suspect making hand gestures while driving unpredictably.
The incident commenced with Fontana police in hot pursuit as the chase swiftly transitioned onto the 10 Freeway, later merging with the 101 Freeway. As the pursuit progressed into Los Angeles, the California Highway Patrol assumed responsibility.
Around 1:48 p.m., officers attempted a PIT maneuver at the intersection of S. Boyle Avenue and E. 8th Street to immobilize the truck, but the suspect managed to evade capture.
By the time the clock neared 2 p.m., the chase had progressed to the southbound 5 Freeway in the East L.A. vicinity, subsequently shifting onto the southbound 710 Freeway just moments later.
The chase came to an end around 2:20 p.m. after the suspect exited the freeway and entered a residential neighborhood in Lynwood. The driver began to slow down, and a CHP officer was able to get ahead of him in time to attempt to deploy a spike strip.
The spike strip was unsuccessful, but the suspect slowing down allowed officers a chance to box him in at Wright Road and Fertile Street. He eventually got out of the pickup truck with his hands up, but began to jog away. That’s when a K-9 was deployed and the man was taken into custody.
The suspect was later loaded into the back of an ambulance, likely due to injuries sustained from the K-9.
Eyewitness News spoke to a customer at China Cook who said he was having lunch when his truck was stolen.
No further details were immediately known.
