HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (WLS) — Crews returned to Lake Michigan on Sunday morning to continue their search, now a recovery effort, for a missing swimmer in the northern suburbs.

The person was last seen struggling in the water on Saturday around noon near the Openlands Lakeshore Preserve at Fort Sheridan in Highland Park.

The search was suspended again Sunday afternoon and was expected to resume on Monday.

There has been a beach hazard warning in place all weekend due to high waves.

City officials say a bystander tried to help the swimmer before they went missing Saturday but was not able to because of the lake’s strong currents.

The Highland Park Fire Department Water Rescue Team began rescue efforts while the police department used a drone in the search.

At one point during the search effort, a member of the dive team was briefly reported missing before later being found.

Crews searched until 6 p.m. before the operation was suspended for the night.

First responders restarted their search efforts on Sunday morning. They planned to conclude their search at noon if no significant progress was made.

Sonar technology and an underwater rover were used in Sunday’s search. The missing swimmer has not yet been found.

The swimmer’s identity was not immediately known.

The start time for Monday’s search effort was also not yet known.
