Artifacts from over 2,000 years ago, belonging to an ancient submerged city, were retrieved from the Mediterranean Sea on Thursday, as reported by Egyptian officials.

These historical finds — including a sphinx statue, Roman coins, and other relics — were recovered from the waters of Abu Qir Bay near Alexandria, Egypt, by archaeologists and divers, according to The Associated Press.

Alexandria, Egypt’s second-largest city, boasts many historical ruins but is gradually sinking due to rising sea levels. By 2050, one-third of the city may become uninhabitable, AFP reported, based on United Nations projections.

In a related discovery earlier this year, Egyptian officials revealed the finding of a 3,000-year-old mining site, featuring remains of ancient dwellings, workshops, and even baths.

The Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
