Houston police shoot gunman who indiscriminately fired on vehicles, injuring a mother and daughter

A man accused of firing at vehicles on a Houston roadway, wounding three people including a mother and her daughter, was shot by police after officers responded to the scene, authorities said.

The violence began around 11 a.m. along Wayside Drive, where officers were called after reports that someone was shooting at passing cars. Houston police said arriving officers encountered a man armed with a gun.

Police said officers ordered the man to drop the weapon. During the encounter, three Houston police officers and a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper fired at the suspect.

The suspect was hit multiple times and transported to a hospital, officials said. No law enforcement officers were hurt.

“He was standing in the median right here,” a witness told KRIV-TV. “He was just shooting at cars coming down Wayside. He didn’t care who was coming which way. He didn’t care who he was shooting at. He didn’t care if there were kids in the car.”

Police said one of the vehicles struck by gunfire was carrying a woman and her daughter, and both were wounded. A third victim, who was in another vehicle, was also shot.
