Booker: Iran's Leader Had Fatwa Against Nukes Until Trump Blew Things Up, They Still Have Enriched Uranium

During a recent segment on CNN’s “Situation Room,” Senator Cory Booker from New Jersey expressed concerns about the current state of nuclear negotiations with Iran. He explained that the Iranian government still possesses its stockpile of highly-enriched uranium, a significant issue following recent political shifts. Booker criticized the actions taken by former President Donald Trump, suggesting that his administration’s policies dismantled earlier diplomatic progress.

According to Booker, Trump’s approach has left the U.S. attempting to regain the diplomatic ground lost since the onset of this nuclear crisis. He pointed out that the situation has escalated, with Iran’s regime becoming more radicalized. Furthermore, he highlighted that Trump had no effective strategy to eliminate Iran’s enriched uranium reserves, exacerbating the issue.

Booker reflected on the period before Trump’s presidency, noting that the Strait of Hormuz remained open, and there existed a comprehensive nuclear agreement. This deal included Iran’s commitment to refrain from developing nuclear weapons, alongside rigorous monitoring measures such as spot inspections and surveillance to ensure compliance. He emphasized that a religious decree, or fatwa, was in place against the development of nuclear arms. However, Booker lamented that Trump’s policies effectively dismantled these efforts, leading to the present, more precarious situation.
