According to police, officers spotted a white Mercedes in the 800-block of North Homan Avenue in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. This vehicle was reportedly linked to a shooting that took place earlier that day.
At approximately 5:30 p.m., officers attempted to pull over the Mercedes, but the male driver fled, prompting a police pursuit, officials stated.
During the chase, the driver reportedly struck a pedestrian and continued to evade officers, eventually crashing into a CTA bus multiple times. Additionally, the driver collided with an unmarked CPD squad car, police reported.
As officers endeavored to halt the Mercedes and apprehend the driver, one officer discharged their weapon, hitting the driver, according to police accounts.
Video shows CPD officers with guns drawn, pounding on the doors of the Mercedes. Officers could be heard yelling, “Get out of the car.” Then, six guns shots were fired.
Chris Mathae and his wife live down the street from where the shooting took place at West Chicago and North Homan avenues. They heard the shots and saw the aftermath.
“Once the shots went off, I yelled for her to run in the house. And then, we just hid in the house for a few minutes until it cleared off,” Mathae said. “Looking down there, I saw the police giving compressions to the man on the ground.”
Officers rendered aid to the man, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The man’s relatives, who did not want to speak on camera, say they believe police could have done more to deescalate the situation, which unfolded with many people around.
The man’s family told ABC7 he had pulled up to get food when he was swarmed by officers. They said he was trying to get away when he was shot, adding that he never fired a weapon. CPD did not immediately say whether the man fired shots.
Two officers were hospitalized with minor injuries, CPD said. The woman hit by the Mercedes suffered a lower body injury and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.
Chopper 7 was over the scene, where a large police presence could be seen.
CPD’s Investigative Response Team and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability are investigating. The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum period of 30 days.
Meanwhile, residents concerned about safety in their neighborhood say they are planning to meet with city leaders, alleging that criminal activity takes place on their street daily.
“I called the police about it every day, and I don’t get anybody coming out,” Mathae said.
Authorities did not immediately provide further information about the shooting.
