A man is facing charges after allegedly shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend on Chicago’s Northwest Side in January, according to prosecutors.
The family of the victim, 30-year-old Andrew Garay, expressed relief outside the courtroom on Sunday, grateful that a suspect has been apprehended for the murder.

“One of our biggest fears was that no one would be held accountable. We’re relieved that justice is being pursued,” said Karjan Dambaugh, Garay’s cousin.
The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Jonathan Roldan, was taken into custody late last week in connection with the shooting that occurred on January 23.
Garay, a U.S. Army veteran, had been in a relationship with Roldan’s former partner for several years. Roldan had a long-standing relationship of 17 years with her and shares two children with her.
Prosecutors revealed that witnesses quickly identified Roldan as a suspect during the investigation. Surveillance footage also reportedly captured him at the crime scene on the night of the shooting.
Garay had just dropped his girlfriend off at her home in the Humboldt Park neighborhood and was waiting for her to go inside, prosecutors said. Roldan allegedly walked up from the gangway and fired one shot through the driver’s side window, hitting Garay in the forehead and killing him.
“He was assassinated. This wasn’t spur-of-the-moment. This was planned. It was clear from the beginning,” Dambaugh said.
Garay had a 7-year-old daughter. His family says his loss has been very difficult to deal with.
“I still struggled Daly with believing he’s gone. There are times I grabbed my phone with the instinct of calling him or sending him a quick text, and then, it hits us all over again,” Dambaugh said.
Roldan is charged with first-degree murder. The judge ordered him held in jail pending trial. His next court appearance is scheduled for next week.
