Chicago immigration operations: DHS Secretary Kristi Noem to speak in Gary, Indiana as Pritzker calls for pause in operations

CHICAGO (WLS) — Gov. JB Pritzker on Monday signed new legislation regulating artificial intelligence into Illinois law.

The measure, Senate Bill 315, known as the Artificial Intelligence Safety Measures Act, was approved by Illinois lawmakers in May.

24/7.

Supporters said the proposal was shaped in part by AI laws enacted in New York and California in 2025, with the goal of helping build a broader national framework as federal rules remain limited.

The law focuses on the most advanced AI systems created by major companies, using thresholds that include $500 million in revenue and a significant computing-capacity benchmark. OpenAI and Anthropic backed the measure as it moved through the legislature, and it cleared the House in a 110-0 vote.

Under the law, developers must produce and publicly release a transparency framework detailing how they follow industry standards, evaluate model capabilities and the potential for catastrophic risk, and detect and respond to safety incidents.

The legislation also requires developers to use third-party auditors to verify compliance with that framework, a requirement that remains disputed by some technology industry groups, including TechNet, a coalition of tech executives.

Enforcement authority will rest solely with the Illinois attorney general, who may seek civil penalties of up to $3 million for each violation.
