LAS VEGAS — In a striking revelation during CrimeCon Las Vegas, a prominent forensic expert who has dedicated years to one of the nation’s largest medical examiner offices shared her insights with Fox News Digital. She voiced concerns that Nancy Guthrie might have fallen prey to a local individual who assumed her family was wealthy.
The forensic scientist, Barbara Butcher, expressed her astonishment at the situation. “It’s baffling that anyone would target an elderly woman like her,” Butcher remarked. “My suspicion is that someone nearby, perhaps a handyman or a service provider, discovered that Mrs. Guthrie was related to Savannah Guthrie and presumed she was wealthy. This person is clearly not in their right mind.”
Butcher, known for her role as a medicolegal death investigator and as the host of Oxygen’s “The Death Investigator,” also commented on the absence of a credible ransom demand. This raises the alarming possibility that Guthrie might have succumbed to shock or a pre-existing medical issue soon after her abduction. Such a scenario could have prompted the suspect to obscure the evidence hastily and disappear before law enforcement could intervene.
As the investigation continues, FBI agents are actively canvassing neighborhoods around Nancy Guthrie’s Tucson residence. The search for clues about her disappearance remains a top priority. Reflecting further, Butcher added, “When no valid ransom demand materialized over time, it became increasingly likely that Mrs. Guthrie died shortly after being taken—perhaps due to shock, fear, or a heart condition.” She continued with a grim prediction, “It’s horrifying to think that the kidnapper, realizing they had nothing, might have taken her body into the desert to conceal it.”
“And that’s just horrifying to me…and so now this kidnapper had nothing and probably, unfortunately, took her body into the desert and buried her there.”

The family is urging anyone with information to dial 1-800-CALL-FBI. There is a combined reward of more than $1.2 million for information that breaks the case.
