James L. Brooks, a powerhouse in the entertainment industry, has an impressive portfolio that includes classics like “Terms of Endearment,” “Broadcast News,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” and “The Simpsons.”

Brooks is now turning heads with his latest film, “Ella McCay.” Reflecting on his illustrious journey, he mused, “Love? Yes. Do I not feel? Do I not hurt? Yes,” suggesting the emotional rollercoaster of his career.

His enthusiasm for “Ella McCay” is palpable. The film centers around a brilliant and determined young woman juggling a demanding career, a complicated family, and a dependent husband, all amidst life’s unpredictable challenges.

Emma Mackey, famed for her role in “Sex Education,” takes the lead in this compelling story.

“It’s a monumental piece,” Mackey remarked. “From the first read, I was captivated by its uniqueness. This script offers a rare glimpse into a woman’s complete life, something that’s seldom portrayed.”

Mackey’s portrayal has won over her co-stars, with Albert Brooks and Jamie Lee Curtis expressing admiration for her talent.

“She is so unbelievably great in this movie and so beautiful and funny and fragile and fierce and complicated, like a young Katharine Hepburn,” said Curtis. “It’s a gorgeous performance.”

Brooks added: “I think one of the great things about a movie is the discovery of a lead. So it’s really cool to watch a beginning. I think that’s exciting. Only movies can do that.”

“Ella McCay” is in theaters Friday, Dec. 12.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of 20th Century Studios and this ABC station.
