Israel currently holds 40% of Gaza City, and a spokesperson for the Israeli military confirmed on Thursday that the Israel Defense Forces are working towards capturing the entire region.
Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin told reporters at a news briefing his forces had already secured large neighborhoods in its latest offensive.
“We continue to damage Hamas’ infrastructure,” he said. “Today, we hold 40% of the territory of Gaza City.
The spokesperson stated, “We will persist in our operations until all the objectives of the war are met. Our primary goals are the return of the hostages and the dismantling of Hamas’ control.”

In regards to evacuations, Israeli authorities report that 70,000 individuals have evacuated Gaza City thus far. However, Palestinian officials argue that significantly fewer have left, as many tens of thousands remain in the advancing forces’ path.
Israel commenced its major military operation in Gaza City on August 10, named “Operation Gideon’s Chariots,” which involved the deployment of tens of thousands of reservists joining its standard military personnel.
There are still 48 hostages believed to be held in Gaza.
Netanyahu initially said Israel would conquer all of Gaza after indirect talks with Hamas on a ceasefire and hostage release deal broke down in July.
