HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) — Attorneys representing Jabari Peoples’ family have filed a revised petition that includes the state bureau of investigation, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, and its leader Christopher Inabinett.

In the initial petition, lawyer Leroy Maxwell asked Homewood city to provide the body camera video of the incident where Peoples was shot in the back by a police officer on June 22. The police department has stated that Peoples reached for a firearm during an altercation with the officer.

Maxwell has now included ALEA, which is conducting the investigation into the shooting. As of Friday, ALEA has withheld the video, asserting that releasing it might jeopardize their investigation.

“Mr. Inabinett failed to explain how a the bodycam footage by the family and their legal representative creates risks of contaminating witness testimony, contaminating or interfering with ALEA’s investigation, or interfering with the chain of custody,” Maxwell wrote.

The case remains under investigation.
