Detectives with the JSO Homicide Unit and the Crime Scene Unit are investigating this incident.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Tragedy struck when a man passed away after entering a hospital with gunshot injuries following a shooting incident at a shopping plaza in Jacksonville, according to authorities.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office reported that the shooting took place around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday near Baymeadows Junction along Phillips Highway. Officers were alerted to the incident but initially found no victims at the location.
Later, a man in his 20s or 30s arrived at a hospital with gunshot wounds. Investigators confirmed he was the individual shot earlier in the evening.
The unidentified man died from his injuries a short time later.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Unit are actively investigating the incident. Currently, the case is being treated as a pending death classification as officers work to understand the circumstances leading to the shooting.
By Sunday morning, crime scene tape still bordered the shopping plaza parking lot. Karrie Ray, who was on her way to the gym there, expressed her surprise upon witnessing the scene.
“Very surprising, normally a lot of things don’t happen here, so I was like afraid that maybe something was still ongoing,” Ray said.
Sergeant Ray Reeves with JSO tells First Coast News that detectives are still working to identify one individual who may have been involved.
“Several individuals from the scene are cooperating with the police,” Sgt. Reeves stated. “We are still searching for another person to question and are requesting assistance from the community.”
