Jacob Freytas, 12, Cop’s Son, Fatally Shot Outside NYC Bodega

The 12-year-old son of a police officer who was fatally shot in the Bronx has been identified as Jacob Freytas, as newly surfaced video captures the devastating moments after he ran back into a bodega clutching his chest and collapsed.

Freytas, a Mount Eden resident, was an innocent bystander when a stray bullet struck him in the chest during a fight outside a store on Elliott Place near the Grand Concourse shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday, police said.

Security footage obtained by The Post shows Jacob leaving his bike outside the bodega and going inside to buy a ball, then stepping back out just as a chaotic street brawl erupts nearby.

Through the doorway, the 12-year-old can be seen getting onto his bike as if to ride away before turning his attention toward the commotion outside when gunfire breaks out.

Moments later, the preteen gets off the bike and rushes back into the store, holding his chest. The harrowing video then shows him collapsing as stunned bystanders watch in horror.

Grieving relatives told The Post on Saturday that Jacob’s father is a police sergeant who was in Connecticut when his son was killed.

Jacob’s uncle, Julio Lopez, said he was walking his dogs when he heard gunshots and “saw people running from around the corner.”

“He was saying hi to guys up the block. He showed respect… He was a good kid. He’s gonna be missed,” Lopez said, adding that he had seen Jacob earlier that same morning.

Up to six men were reportedly involved in the violent brawl, although it wasn’t immediately clear how many people opened fire.

Two other males were shot during the fight outside the Wanda Deli Grocery, including a 34-year-old with a gunshot wound to the left foot, and a 25-year-old who was hit in the buttocks, according to the NYPD.

Jacob was hit through the shoulder and transported to NYC Health and Hospitals/Lincoln, where he died.

The other two victims were listed in stable condition.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing, the NYPD said.
