During the latest edition of “Fox News Sunday,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) clarified that, should the Democrats secure a majority in the House this November, impeaching President Donald Trump would not be their foremost agenda item.
Host Shannon Bream opened the discussion by expressing interest in the ongoing redistricting battles, particularly noting the Virginia referendum set to be addressed by the state’s supreme court shortly. She remarked on the Democrats’ optimistic outlook regarding their chances of flipping the House and cited a report from Axios that some Democrats are keen on initiating impeachment proceedings against President Trump from day one if they regain control. Bream asked Jeffries directly whether pursuing impeachment would be his priority if he were to assume the role of Speaker.
Jeffries responded unequivocally, “Of course not.” He emphasized that the primary focus would be on alleviating the high cost of living. Jeffries outlined a vision where hard work and adherence to societal rules should afford Americans a life of comfort and affordability. He stressed the importance of securing good-paying jobs, quality housing, accessible health care, and excellent education for children, culminating in a secure retirement. He articulated that this vision has long defined the American dream, which, for many, has become increasingly elusive. Jeffries insisted that the Democratic agenda would center on enabling Americans not just to survive, but to truly thrive, and this would be a central theme in the upcoming midterm campaigns.
