Viral clip captures woman appearing to smile and wink at camera during Lindsay Clancy trial
A courtroom video from Monday’s proceedings in the Lindsay Clancy case has ignited backlash online after it appeared to show spectator Brittany Romano smiling, posing and winking toward the livestream camera. The moment quickly circulated across social media, where many viewers condemned the behavior as inappropriate given the gravity of a trial centered on the deaths of three young children. Romano later responded to the criticism on social media, saying her facial expressions were directed at family members watching the broadcast.
The conduct of a spectator at the Lindsay Clancy trial has drawn widespread attention after footage appeared to capture a woman grinning and winking at the camera used for the court’s livestream.
Near the close of the day’s proceedings, as the camera moved across the gallery and spectators were instructed to stand, a woman in a green dress appeared to smile before winking as the shot panned away.
The woman appears to be Brittany Romano, identified on her professional website as a New York City-based journalist whose work has appeared in outlets including “Elle,” “Cosmopolitan” and “Teen Vogue.”

Romano has been closely following the case and has shared posts about the trial across her social media accounts.
Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother, is on trial for murder in connection with the 2023 strangling deaths of her three young children inside the family’s home in Duxbury.

She doesn’t deny the charges, and her defense argues she is not “criminally responsible” because she was suffering from undiagnosed postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings.
As for Romano, she recently posed for a “selfie” with Clancy’s Attorney Kevin Reddington last week and posted it on X.

In a video posted to social media following the Monday proceedings, someone appears to ask Romano why she was reportedly smiling on the livestream, to which she responded and said, “I was laughing because I grew up with Lindsay,” she says.

Following her new social media fame, Romano has defended her actions and wrote in a post: “I’m actually proud of myself because these trolls have been absolutely vile,” the now-deleted post said in part.
News Outlet has reached out to the court and Romano for comment.
