The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says the 18-year-old suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his left leg.

An 18-year-old man was involved in a shooting incident on Wednesday night when he attempted to disarm someone allegedly firing shots in the air at Charles Clark Park located in Northwest Jacksonville, as reported by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

JSO Sgt. Smith reported that officers were alerted just before 10 p.m. on Wednesday after receiving information about the 18-year-old who had been shot, and subsequently arrived at UF Health hospital. Sergeant Smith confirmed that the young man sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot to his left leg.

Based on JSO’s initial investigation into the incident, Smith said the 18-year-old was at the park when the suspect began shooting a gun in the air.

“The victim tried to intervene and prevent the man from firing by taking the gun,” Smith explained to First Coast News. “During this attempt, the victim was shot. Unfortunately, the victim could not identify the shooter. This seems to be an isolated case with no additional risk posed to the community.”

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call JSO’s non-emergency number at 904-630-0500. To provide information anonymously, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
