According to the Prime Minister, such turmoil has been a key factor in driving steep energy costs, affecting ordinary households. Despite these strong words, Starmer’s own measures to address the issue have been scrutinized for their limited scope.

In the same interview, Starmer reiterated his firm stance against the UK being drawn into Trump’s conflicts, emphasizing that “our bases will not be and are not being used for wider offensive, especially not against civilians.” He stressed the importance of a lawful basis for any involvement, reiterating his commitment to a careful, measured approach.

“From the start, we’ve been closely monitoring the situation,” Starmer assured. “I’m very clear about what we’ve agreed upon regarding the use of our bases. We won’t be dragged into this war, as maintaining a lawful basis is crucial,” he affirmed, highlighting his dedication to a principled foreign policy.

“That matters if you’re going to commit our service personnel to risk their lives,” he added.

Starmer first drew Trump’s ire in February when he denied the US request to use a British base on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean for the war on Iran.

Beyond calls for “de-escalation” and diplomatic talks, critics say the prime minister has offered little to quell tensions.

His government has focused on international coordination and long-term resilience — including closer ties with Europe and securing shipping routes — rather than intervention.
