In an earlier report, RedState highlighted a CBS News article scrutinizing the Trump administration’s approach to immigration enforcement. The article referenced an internal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) document revealing that under President Trump’s leadership, less than 14% of nearly 400,000 immigrants detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during his first year in office faced charges or convictions related to violent crimes.
The CBS News piece further stated, “The internal document shows that nearly 60% of those arrested by ICE in the past year had criminal charges or convictions. However, most of these were not for violent offenses.”
In response, DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin pointed out, “Crimes such as drug trafficking, distribution of child pornography, burglary, fraud, DUI, embezzlement, solicitation of a minor, and human smuggling are classified as ‘non-violent crimes.’ Despite this classification, these offenses are undeniably serious.”
