Pride festivities in Downers Grove, Illinois, proceeded on Saturday, undeterred by recent debates and community meetings regarding the event’s hosting.
“In Downers Grove, everyone is welcome. Come as you are, and you’ll find a place here,” stated local resident Stephanie Lucas.

This year, the event was relocated indoors due to potential rainfall, a decision attendees welcomed as it provided relief from the day’s heat.
The celebration of Pride Month took place at the Lincoln Center, attracting over 1,000 participants from various age groups.
“It’s amazing to witness such inclusivity and harmony among all ages, especially in a world where hatred exists,” remarked Elvis Daarol from Hoffman Estates.
While there was some minor opposition from a few community members, organizers noted that the overwhelming majority in Downers Grove supports Pride events, a sentiment reflected in Saturday’s large attendance.
“There wasn’t much of a controversy here,” said Downers Grove Officer of Equality Jodi Harap. “Downers Grove is a wonderful accepting community, and we’re really proud to be here.”
The event included a number of activities as well as music and food featuring local organizations and businesses.
The event was moved inside because of the chance for rain, but those attending say it still made for a special celebration.
“I think it’s fantastic. I mean, we’re all not that different, and we can’t be living with fear of one another and have to come together as a community more than ever,” said LaGrange Park resident David Mrazek.
The event wrapped up on Saturday afternoon. Village officials say they look forward to continuing hosting Pride events in the coming years.
