Lionel Richie hospitalized after St. Louis show in latest health concern

Lionel Richie sought medical attention over the weekend after performing in St. Louis, TMZ reported, marking another recent health-related concern for the former Commodores frontman.

During Saturday night’s concert at The Muny, video from the performance appeared to show Richie leaning on a piano for support. Fans later said the 77-year-old singer requested a chair before delivering his closing song, “All Night Long.”

Following the show, Richie checked himself into a local hospital for tests, with slight dehydration believed to be a possible factor, TMZ reported.

It was not the first time this year that the Grammy-winning performer has dealt with health issues while on stage.

In June, Richie sat down during a concert in Minnesota while performing “Dancing on the Ceiling,” telling the crowd he felt dizzy. He ended that show early and later postponed concerts in Chicago and Columbus, Ohio.

The following month, during a Madison Square Garden performance, he made light of the situation by joking between songs that he needed electrolytes.

Richie is currently touring with Earth, Wind and Fire on the 26-city “Sing A Song All Night Long” tour.

A defining pop songwriter of the late 20th century, Richie first rose to fame with the Commodores in the 1970s, helping deliver classics such as “Easy,” “Three Times a Lady” and “Brick House.” He launched a solo career in the early 1980s and went on to score major hits with ballads including “Hello,” “My Love” and “Say You, Say Me.”

Richie also co-wrote the global smash hit “We Are The World” in 1985 with Michael Jackson, which helped raise millions for famine relief efforts in Ethiopia. He has been a judge on “American Idol” since 2018.

The singer has been nominated for 33 Grammys and won four, including album of the year in 1985 for “Can’t Slow Down” and song of the year in 1986 for “We Are The World.”
