Father stabbed to death by his own son inside Long Island apartment on Labor Day: police

A Long Island father who was repeatedly stabbed in the torso allegedly by his adult son managed to crawl to a phone and call police before he died, officials said.

Sage Arias-Brown, 33, is accused of forcing his way into the Mastic apartment of his father, 69-year-old Edward Brown, around 12:30 a.m. Monday, then stabbing him several times in the abdomen and chest before running off, according to Suffolk County prosecutors.

“A witness heard [Arias-Brown] gain entry into the apartment and heard [Brown] screaming for help — the witness then saw him exit the building,” Assistant District Attorney Melissa Grier told the court, as the accused killer appeared in a worn tracksuit and fidgeted through his arraignment.

Despite his wounds, Brown was able to reach a phone and dial 911 to report the attack before collapsing while waiting for emergency responders, Grier said.

Prosecutors said Brown was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not yet detailed what happened inside the apartment or whether any confrontation preceded the stabbing.

Arias-Brown, whose attorney Katherine Fernandez said has a history of mental illness and an open robbery case, was arrested a short distance from his father’s apartment soon after the killing, police said.

He pleaded not guilty Tuesday to second-degree murder, was ordered held without bail and is scheduled to return to court Friday.
