Notice how, now that the country is caught up in the Schumer Shutdown, Democrats are suddenly buzzing about Republican accusations that they prioritized healthcare benefits for illegal immigrants using taxpayer money? Let’s take a trip back to 2020 with Mr. Peabody and the Wayback Machine, during the Democratic Party’s presidential primary debate. Remember this moment?
Here’s the question from NBC News’ Savannah Guthrie that they are all answering in the affirmative:
The discussion was about the government healthcare plans proposed in various forms. This was a question that required a show of hands, and they were held up for everyone to see. Raise your hand if your plan would offer coverage to undocumented immigrants.
Hint: She refers to illegal immigrants. Notice that every candidate, including “Autopen Joe” Biden and Kamala Harris, raised their hands. All of them did. Now, that incident is coming back to trouble the Democrats.
With the federal government shutdown ongoing, a clip from the 2020 Democratic primary went viral, where candidates were asked if they endorsed providing healthcare to undocumented immigrants.
“Is JD Vance lying or simply uninformed when he says Democrats want to give health benefits to undocumented immigrants?” Former Democratic Minnesota Sen. Al Franken posted on X on Wednesday, prompting a user to share the clip in the comments.
“Raise your hand if your government plan would provide coverage for undocumented immigrants,” NBC News anchor Savannah Guthrie asked while moderating the June 2019 debate, followed by all ten Democrats on stage raising their hands.
Franken’s post triggered a range of responses, including from conservatives.
Now, let’s be fair; this isn’t an official policy proposal. No legislation or rule change is being proposed here. It’s just… well, it’s just every single Democrat (and one Independent, the daffy old Bolshevik from Vermont) presidential candidate, raising their hands in a Pavlovian response to the mention of free stuff for illegal immigrants.
The clip, which included multiple current members of Congress like Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif.; Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y.; and Sen Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., also garnered the attention of billionaire Elon Musk, who posted “lol” in response to the debate video, which means “laugh out loud.”
LOL, indeed.
