A mandatory evacuation has been issued following an explosion at a plant in Louisiana on Friday.
The explosion happened at Smitty’s Supply, a lubricant manufacturer based in Roseland, Tangipahoa Parish, according to local authorities. A significant plume of smoke was visible after the blast.

The explosion was reported shortly before 1 p.m., according to Tangipahoa Parish President Robby Miller.
Following the event, the Tangipahoa Parish government swiftly declared a mandatory evacuation for the vicinity, which expanded to cover a 1-mile radius surrounding the facility.
“Relocate IMMEDIATELY and stay away from this area until further notice,” the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office said on X.

An elementary school located within the evacuation zone was evacuating students to a location in Amite City.
No injuries have been reported, “which is a godsend,” Miller said at a press briefing late Friday afternoon.
The blaze is still ongoing, and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality is assessing the environmental impact, noted Miller. The cause of the explosion remains unknown.

Smitty’s Supply is involved in the production and distribution of lubricants, such as motor oils, per its website. Approximately 400 employees work at this location, Miller stated.
Highway 51 at Highway 10 in Roseland closed following the explosion.
“We are keeping a close watch on the situation. Please adhere to the instructions from local authorities,” stated Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry on X. “Our thoughts are with everyone’s safety.”
