Once a formidable force in British politics, Margaret Thatcher led the United Kingdom with an iron will. In a humorous twist, Senator John Kennedy finds himself somewhat overpowered by his own “Margaret”—an elliptical trainer named after the iconic leader.
Senator John Kennedy from Louisiana has gained attention online with a playful workout video. In the clip, he introduces viewers to “Margaret,” his elliptical machine, drawing a parallel to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Sporting a red bandanna, Kennedy addresses the camera from his carport in Louisiana.
“Hey X, I want you to meet someone,” Kennedy begins in the video, which he shared on social media last Friday.
“This is Margaret. She’s my elliptical trainer. I named her after Margaret Thatcher because both are tough and take no prisoners.”
Kennedy explains why “Margaret” resides outside under the carport: the equipment is too cumbersome to move, his wife forbids it inside, and he relishes the chance to exercise in the Louisiana summer.
The Senator’s preference for outdoor workouts during the sweltering Louisiana summers surprised many, given the region’s notoriously oppressive heat and humidity.
“As you can see, Margaret, my elliptical trainer, is out here under my carport in Louisiana,” Kennedy says. “After Margaret kicks my butt, I look for air conditioning.”
The surreal, self-aware clip quickly drew thousands of reactions online, with users roasting Kennedyâs bandanna look while also praising the senatorâs everyman personality.
“You are rocking the dadgum crap outta that bandana,” one user wrote. “I thought you were representing the Bloods for a minute. Tell Margaret I think sheâs cute but evil.”
Others praised Kennedyâs personality and down-home delivery style.
“You are a gem to us normal folk Mr. Kennedy. Live long and prosper!” one supporter posted.
“Senator Kennedy is that kind of Southerner that makes you feel you’re sitting on the front porch having some bit of common sense enlighten you in that poetic Southern way,” another wrote.
The Louisiana Republican has long cultivated a folksy, humorous public image that often breaks through online with colorful one-liners and unconventional social media moments.
Kennedy ended the video with a line that only added to the internetâs fascination.
“My work here is done,” he said. “And I can see myself out.”
