Macaulay Culkin is contemplating a return to the iconic “Home Alone” series, which launched him into stardom as a child actor. He even has an intriguing concept for a new adventure featuring Kevin McCallister.
During his ongoing tour titled “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin”, the 45-year-old actor shared with fans that he’s open to revisiting the beloved holiday classics penned by John Hughes, as long as the project feels “right,” according to Variety.
Culkin envisions the character of Kevin—whom he first brought to life in 1990’s “Home Alone” and its 1992 sequel “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York”—as potentially being “either a widower or a divorcee” with a clever child of his own.
Describing his idea, Culkin said, “I’m busy with work and not giving enough attention, which frustrates my son. Then, I find myself locked out, and he’s the one setting traps for me. The house symbolizes our relationship, and the journey involves me trying to reconnect with my son.”
Culkin has not disclosed any plans regarding the return of other legendary characters like Joe Pesci’s Harry or Daniel Stern’s Marv, the duo famously known as the Wet Bandits. Pesci and Stern appeared in the first two films but did not participate in subsequent installments.
Neither Culkin nor director Chris Columbus, who helmed the original two movies, were involved in the various sequels that followed. However, Devin Ratray reprised his role as Buzz McCallister for the 2021 film “Home Sweet Home Alone.”
As for any sort of sequel, Columbus told Entertainment Tonight in August that he thinks a new “Home Alone” movie should never be made.
“I think ‘Home Alone’ really exists as, not at this timepiece, but it was this very special moment, and you can’t really recapture that,” Columbus said. “I think it’s a mistake to try to go back and recapture something we did 35 years ago. I think it should be left alone.”
