As part of its “Bold New Chapter” strategy, Macy’s has announced plans to close more than a dozen stores by 2026, aiming for a more streamlined operation. This initiative, unveiled in 2024, is part of a broader effort to shutter around 150 underperforming locations over a three-year period while channeling resources into more promising outlets. The previous year witnessed the closure of 66 stores under this plan.
Headquartered in Washington, Macy’s is embracing a leaner business model as it continues to evaluate its retail footprint. CEO Tony Spring emphasized the thoughtful approach to these decisions in a statement released on Wednesday. “We are judiciously reviewing our store portfolio to ensure we invest wisely, which involves closing stores that do not meet performance expectations and simplifying our operations. Such decisions are made with care,” Spring explained. The company is committed to supporting affected employees with potential transfers, severance packages, and career transition assistance. “We appreciate the dedication and service of all colleagues impacted by these changes,” he added.
Spring highlighted that these strategic adjustments allow Macy’s to concentrate on initiatives with the most significant potential, such as reinventing leading stores, boosting customer service, expanding into the luxury market, and enhancing supply chain efficiency. Interestingly, these closures come despite an uptick in Macy’s sales, underscoring the retailer’s focus on long-term sustainability and growth.
“In executing our strategy, we continue to review our portfolio and make careful decisions about where and how we invest, including closing underproductive stores and streamlining operations. These decisions are not made lightly,” Macy’s CEO Tony Spring said in a statement shared on Wednesday. “We communicated directly with affected colleagues first and are providing support, including transfer opportunities where available, as well as severance and outplacement resources where applicable. We thank all those colleagues for their dedication and service to the company.”
“These targeted changes allow us to focus where it will have the greatest impact – reimagining our best stores, enhancing customer service, expanding our luxury business, and advancing our supply chain capabilities,” Spring added.
The roughly dozen closures come even as Macy’s noted an increase in sales.
Axios reported on Wednesday that the clearance sales at the impacted stores will begin mid-January and will run for 10 weeks.
