Slain LSU student Madison Brooks’ alleged rapist wants supporters banned from wearing pink at trial: report

An attorney for one of three men charged in connection with the alleged rape of LSU student Madison Brooks is asking the court to bar her loved ones and supporters from wearing pink during the upcoming trial.

Brooks, 19, was a Louisiana State University student when she was fatally struck by a vehicle on a Baton Rouge highway in 2023 after prosecutors say a group of men raped her and then left her near the roadway. The driver who hit Brooks remained at the scene and was later cleared of wrongdoing.

Nearly three years later, Desmond Carter, 21, one of the men accused in the case, is scheduled to appear before a judge later this month.

Authorities allege Carter, along with Kaivon Washington and Casen Carver, sexually assaulted Brooks inside a vehicle after the group had spent the night drinking at a local bar. All three men are facing rape charges tied to the incident.

According to Baton Rouge outlet WBRZ, Carter’s defense team has filed a motion seeking to restrict pink clothing and apparel bearing messages of support for Brooks, contending such displays could prejudice jurors or create an atmosphere of intimidation.

In the filing, the defense cited the Supreme Court decisions in “Sheppard v. Maxwell” and “Estes v. Texas,” both of which addressed concerns about media-fueled “carnival atmospheres” and the need to protect courtroom fairness, arguing that coordinated spectator messages could undermine Carter’s right to a fair trial.

The prosecution opposed the motion, characterizing the pink clothing as victim advocacy rather than jury intimidation.
