Mamdani refuses to say whether he'll boost cops in subways after fatal shooting on Midtown platform

New York City is moving in the right direction, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said.

But Mamdani declined Monday to say whether he would increase police patrols in the subway system after a security guard was fatally shot on a Midtown station platform while heading to work.

Pressed on whether he would send more officers underground to reassure straphangers following Saturday’s brazen attack, Mamdani gave no clear answer. The gunman remains at large.

“I have full confidence in our PD in their work to apprehend the suspect, and I am confident in the approach that they are taking at this time,” the democratic socialist mayor told reporters during an unrelated news conference in The Bronx.

Mamdani expressed condolences to the family of 26-year-old Darell Rodriguez, who was shot in the chest shortly before 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the 53rd Street/7th Avenue subway station. The masked attacker has not been arrested.

“I am heartbroken and outraged by this shooting,” Mamdani said, but did not answer a reporter’s question about the city’s response to the shocking incident.

“Every single New Yorker deserves to be safe on every single train, on every single subway platform, no matter where they’re going across our five boroughs, and we know that we’ve made strides in making our subway safer, and we also know that this shooting serves as an incredibly painful reminder of all that still has to be done to root out the scourge of gun violence from across our city,” he said.

“And at this time, you know, my heart goes out to the family of the individual who was killed, to the loved ones of the individual who was killed.”

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
