In Kentucky, a man allegedly attacked a passerby with a cleaver, claiming his motive was the victim’s foreign origin, authorities reported.

Jeremiah Page, 30, faces charges of attempted murder and first-degree assault, as confirmed by the Louisville Metro Police Department to Law&Crime. He made a court appearance on Tuesday.

The incident unfolded on Monday around 5:30 p.m. on Preston Highway in Louisville, according to local CBS affiliate WLKY, which referenced police arrest records. Page, armed with a “cleaver-knife,” allegedly approached a man on the sidewalk and attacked him, striking the victim twice on the head and once on the shoulder.

Following the assault, the suspect reportedly fled, while witnesses and surveillance footage documented the event. Despite a language barrier, the victim managed to communicate with the officers at the scene and was subsequently hospitalized with severe injuries.

As of Wednesday, police confirmed the victim remains alive but did not provide further medical updates.

Officers apprehended Page in the vicinity, still carrying the cleaver. After being read his Miranda rights, he reportedly admitted to the attack, as per the court documents.

When asked why he did it, Page told investigators that the man was “trespassing on his land” and that he tried to kill him “because he was a foreigner,” area ABC affiliate WHAS reported. The suspect allegedly also claimed that he “owned all of Louisville.”

During his appearance in court on Tuesday, the defendant’s bond was set at $750,000. He is due back in court on April 17.
