A man was fatally shot in Washington, D.C. on Monday, just hours following President Donald Trump’s declaration of a federal intervention in the city’s police department.

The victim was discovered on the 1200 block of 12th Street NW in the Logan Circle area of Washington, D.C. around 7 p.m., according to a Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson who spoke with Fox News Digital.

“Upon arrival, officers found an adult male who was unconscious and not breathing, with multiple gunshot wounds. DC Fire and EMS personnel transported the victim to a local hospital, where, despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead,” the spokesperson stated. “Homicide Detectives are currently investigating.”

On that same Monday, Trump announced plans to place the police department under the control of U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi as a strategy to combat crime. He also mentioned the mobilization of approximately 800 National Guard members to restore “law, order, and public safety” in the nation’s capital.

The District of Columbia Home Rule Act allows Trump to place the city’s police department under federal control for up to 30 days.

The Washington, D.C. City Council called the temporary takeover a “manufactured intrusion on local authority.”

“Violent crime in the District has reached the lowest levels in 30 years. Federalizing the Metropolitan Police Department is unnecessary, as there is no Federal emergency,” the council remarked in a joint statement. “Moreover, the National Guard lacks training in public safety and knowledge of local laws. The Guard’s responsibilities do not include crime investigation or resolution in the District. Deploying the National Guard is unwarranted and lacks a clear mission.”

Metropolitan Police Department data shows that while the homicide rate is falling, the last five years saw the greatest number of murders since 2008.
