Manhattan Beach Hit by Rise in Two Types of Vehicle Theft

Manhattan Beach police are urging Kia and Hyundai owners to be more vigilant after a recent rise in thefts involving the two vehicle brands.

The Manhattan Beach Police Department said a series of Kia and Hyundai thefts reported during the week of Aug. 6-12 led officials to share prevention tips aimed at helping drivers avoid becoming the next target.

Authorities recommend using steering wheel locks, keeping vehicle doors locked at all times and removing valuables from inside the car whenever it is left unattended.

Police also said an aftermarket alarm or immobilizer can add another layer of security for owners concerned about theft.

Drivers were also encouraged to install a GPS tracker so a stolen vehicle can be located more easily and to make sure the vehicle’s software remains up to date.

Kia and Hyundai models sold between 2011 and 2022 have become frequent targets in recent years because many were not equipped with engine immobilizers, making it possible for thieves to steal them without a proper key.

The issue gained national attention after a viral TikTok trend several years ago showed tutorials on how to start Hyundai Motor Group vehicles without keys, using a USB cable and a screwdriver.

Following that trend, the brands quickly climbed onto the list of the 10 most stolen vehicles in the United States, according to Auto Blog.

In response to the viral trend, automakers rolled out free fixes for Hyundai and Kia owners, offering them “free steering-wheel locks or a free software upgrade,” Carfax.com reported.

The company estimates that more than 4.9 million vehicles across the U.S. still need a fix.

Fifteen states have more than 100,000 Kia and Hyundai vehicles on the road vulnerable to the issue, with California ranked No. 1 with 506,000 cars.

Earlier this year, the two car brands agreed to a $9 million class action settlement for victims of the trend.

Drivers have until March 31, 2027, to submit their claims for reimbursement, which will be distributed on a “rolling basis.”

Eligibility can be confirmed on the settlement website by entering your car’s VIN.
