LOS ANGELES — Picture this: the person entrusted with the care of your children is not who they appear to be. This unsettling scenario forms the backbone of Hulu’s latest thriller, “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,” featuring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Maika Monroe in lead roles.
The film recently held its world premiere at the iconic Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California. On The Red Carpet had the opportunity to catch up with the stars at the event, diving into their experiences and insights about the film.
Maika Monroe expressed her excitement about taking on a complex role, saying, “This was probably the most fun I’ve had with a role in quite some time because I got to play the villain.”
Mary Elizabeth Winstead shared her thoughts on the film’s unique dynamic, describing how the cast initially embodied an almost idyllic family before the plot took a darker turn. “We got to kind of live in a house as this almost happy family for a while before things start turning sinister,” she explained.
Winstead further elaborated on the experience, saying, “It was so cool to be able to play that out in real time, just showing up and enjoying each other’s company, getting to know one another, and then slowly having Maika come in and start to unravel what’s beneath the surface of that household.”
“It was so cool to be able to play that out in real time, like just get to show up and enjoy each other’s company, getting to know one another and then slowly have Maika coming in and starting to kind of scratch at the surface of what’s going on in that house.”
“I was the main cause of the unrest in the house, Monroe added. “So for me, I actually quite enjoyed it, but I think maybe for the rest of the cast it wasn’t quite as fun.”
Prepare yourself, Winstead teased, “Get your popcorn, it’s going to be a scary one!”
The film is a modern retelling of the 1992 psychological thriller starring Rebecca De Mornay who won an MTV Movie Award that year for Best Villain.
The newly reimagined “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” premieres October 22 on Hulu.
The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of Hulu and this ABC station.
