An alcohol-fueled dispute in Old Sacramento spiraled into a violent stabbing early Saturday, leaving five men hospitalized after the attackers allegedly fled the scene in a white Jeep Cherokee, police said.
Sacramento police were called shortly after 3 a.m. to the area of Front and K streets following reports of an assault with a weapon. When officers arrived, they found three men with stab wounds.
As investigators began piecing together what happened, they learned that two additional men had arrived at a nearby hospital with stab injuries connected to the same incident, bringing the total number of victims to five.
Police said all five men were in stable condition as of Saturday afternoon.
The early-morning attack brings renewed attention to public safety concerns in Old Sacramento, which saw several high-profile incidents in 2021, including a large fight involving roughly 50 juveniles and a homicide later that summer.
Those incidents drew frustration from Old Sacramento business owners at the time, according to earlier reporting by The Sacramento Bee.
A survey conducted during that period also found that residents, merchants and property owners wanted stronger action to address street partying, public intoxication, reckless driving and cruising in the historic district.
Investigators later arrested 18-year-old Sacramento resident Ezekiel Griffis after identifying him as a person of interest in the stabbing case.
He was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on assault charges.
Police initially detained three people of interest in the aftermath of the violence, but later released the other two.
The investigation remains ongoing.
