Approximately 2,000 individuals protesting against ICE took control of a significant highway in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday. Concurrently, rioters set autonomous vehicles ablaze as the third consecutive day of protests descended into further turmoil and destruction.
The massive crowd moved onto the 101 Freeway, blocking traffic around 4 p.m. local time, according to the LAPD.
The demonstrators blocked both sides of the freeway, causing a traffic jam, while law enforcement outfitted in riot gear formed a barrier beneath an overpass to prevent their advance, according to a social media post by LAPD Central Division on X.
California Highway Patrol officers, also equipped in riot gear, intervened by herding the demonstrators onto an exit ramp to push them off the freeway. NBC Los Angeles reported that officers released gas canisters during the confrontation.
The freeway was reopened to car traffic a little more than an hour later.
