A 20-year-old Los Angeles mother was fatally shot through a bedroom window as she slept beside her baby daughter and boyfriend inside the family’s home, authorities and relatives said.
Maria Barrios Ventura was in a residence on the 400 block of West 103rd Street in the Vermont Vista neighborhood when gunfire erupted at about 3:35 a.m. Sunday, July 19.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner later confirmed Ventura as the woman killed in the shooting.
“This sudden and heartbreaking event has left her family devastated and struggling to cope with the loss. She was a loving mother, and her absence is felt deeply by everyone who knew her,” a relative wrote in a GoFundMe created for Ventura’s family.
Los Angeles Police Department officers responding to the home found Ventura suffering from gunshot wounds. Police said she had been hit in the head, according to NBC Los Angeles.
Paramedics tried to revive her, but Ventura was pronounced dead at the scene, KTLA reported.
Her aunt, Liliana Lopez, launched the fundraiser to help pay for funeral costs, transport Ventura’s body back to Guatemala and provide support for her 1-year-old daughter.
“She was a loving mother, and her absence is felt deeply by everyone who knew her,” Lopez wrote.
