Moore to the Point - When Football Was Fun

Just as my parents instilled in me a great love of baseball, so too, they gifted me with a love of football – even losing football, as, after a few bright spots in the late 70s and early 80s, MIZZOU was abysmal until after I graduated. As a 10-year-old, one of my treasured Christmas gifts was a Nerf football. I aspired to become the first woman pro-football player (and the first woman president). I was a tomboy – and a classical feminist.

I carried that love forward into adulthood, thoroughly enjoying the Rams’ tenure here – who could ever forget the magic that was the ’99 season and The Greatest Show on Turf? Even after Stan Kroenke stabbed St. Louis in the back, my affection for the game continued.

And then politics – one of my other loves – ruined it. It’s gotten so bad that even wearing a team jersey or declaring that you intend to watch (or not watch) a game is viewed through a political lens. So, rather than setting aside concerns about geopolitics, wars, crime, or the economy for a few hours to enjoy watching a favorite team or player battle it out on the gridiron while woofing down some nachos and an ice-cold beer, we’re confronted with the political ramifications of what used to just be good old fashioned fun.

We’ve fumbled. Will we ever recover?
