Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed Saturday evening that there had been fatalities, but he did not disclose a casualty count or identify the cause of the blast. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is leading the investigation.
The RCMP said it received reports of a fire in the base’s military training area shortly after 4 p.m. local time. Powerful winds drove the flames beyond the installation’s perimeter fence and into nearby areas, prompting firefighting agencies from several jurisdictions to join the response.
McGuinty discussed the incident during a late-Saturday briefing.

“I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base. The Canadian Armed Forces, the Department of National Defense, partners across the federal government, including public safety, are working with the government of Alberta and the municipal governments to mobilize all necessary support and working through the details of what actually occurred.”
McGuinty called the situation “very, very active and delicate,” adding that officials would provide more information as it became available.

The scale of the injuries appeared to strain local medical capacity. Dr. Warren Thirsk, an emergency physician at Edmonton’s Royal Alexandra Hospital, said hospitals had activated a “code orange” disaster protocol to handle patients being transferred from Wainwright.
Extra medical teams were brought in, while patients were being distributed among hospitals throughout Edmonton. Thirsk said healthcare facilities in Wainwright had already been overwhelmed by the number of people needing treatment.
“It is more patients than any of us want to count right now. It’s a disaster. It’s a one in every 15 to 25-year disaster.”
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called the fire “significant and tragic” and said it was affecting numerous military personnel. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said his province was sending resources to support Alberta’s emergency operations.
The Municipal District of Wainwright said high winds were causing the fire to spread quickly. No evacuation order had been issued by Saturday evening, but residents were told to stay away from the affected area and leave roads open for emergency crews.
Located about 112 miles southeast of Edmonton, CFB Wainwright is one of Canada’s busiest military training facilities. The base is home to the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre, where soldiers prepare for battlefield operations and combined-arms exercises.
The installation has roughly 690 military personnel and 300 civilian employees, with additional troops arriving during large-scale training operations.
The disaster also interrupted advance voting ahead of Alberta’s October 19 referendum on whether the province should begin a process that could eventually lead to independence from Canada. Elections Alberta said polling locations had closed early and that election materials had been secured. The vote, the first referendum of its kind in Alberta’s history, had already attracted national attention before Saturday’s incident.
By Saturday night, officials had not determined what triggered the explosion, how many people had died or whether a training exercise was underway at the time. McGuinty said the investigation remained active and that further information would be released in the coming hours and days.
