A high-speed chase in Washington County, Virginia, culminated in the arrest of a 20-year-old Alabama man on Wednesday. Authorities have identified the suspect as Muhammad Camara from Homewood, Alabama.

The incident unfolded around 11 a.m. when a Honda Accord was spotted zipping down Interstate 81 near Exit 29, reaching speeds of 107 miles per hour in a zone marked for 70 mph, according to a news release from the Washington County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office (WCSO).

The chase took a dramatic turn when the Honda exited at Exit 32, causing damage to several pasture fences along the way. In a bid to evade capture, Camara attempted to rejoin the interstate but lost control, leading to a crash.

Unwilling to surrender, Camara reportedly fled the crash site on foot, darting across multiple lanes of busy interstate traffic and leaping over fences in a desperate escape attempt, as detailed by the WCSO.

The pursuit concluded with Camara’s arrest following an extensive search of the area. He now faces several charges and remains in custody without bond at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail as of Thursday.

  • Reckless driving
  • Felony eluding law enforcement
  • Felony vandalism

As of Thursday, Camara is being held without bond at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail.

The WCSO thanked the Glade Spring Police Department, Virginia State Police, Chilhowie Police Department, Smyth County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Service for their assistance.
