Stabbing near Nantucket ferry docks rattles wealthy island enclave as summer crowds arrive

A stabbing was reported Tuesday morning in downtown Nantucket, only a short walk from the ferry docks where crowds of summer travelers arrive on the affluent Massachusetts island, officials said.

According to Nantucket police, officers were called at 10:23 a.m. to South Beach Street, between Broad Street and Oak Street, after receiving a report of a stabbing. The location sits along a busy commercial corridor near the Steamship Authority ferry terminal, where visitors pour into the island’s cobblestoned downtown.

The victim received treatment at the scene before being transported by the Nantucket Fire Department to Nantucket Cottage Hospital, police said.

The incident occurred in one of the island’s busiest downtown areas.

Witnesses told the Nantucket Current that the stabbing came after a verbal and physical confrontation involving the driver of a Myles Reis garbage truck and the driver of a Sayles Seafood delivery truck that had stopped nearby.

After being stabbed, the injured person ran toward “The Strip,” witnesses told the local news outlet. Workers at Stubby’s and other nearby businesses reportedly used napkins in an effort to slow the bleeding until emergency crews arrived.
