NC Doctor Accused of Shooting 2 Sisters in Interstate Road Rage Attack

A North Carolina physician was taken into custody on Aug. 22 after authorities say he opened fire on a Jeep during an apparent road rage encounter on an interstate, injuring two sisters, ages 12 and 20, Virginia State Police said.

Police identified the suspect as Dr. Richard Thomas Arriviello, 61, of Charlotte, North Carolina. Investigators said he was traveling north on Interstate 77 in a Mercedes-Benz at about 8:50 a.m. when the shooting occurred roughly three miles past the North Carolina-Virginia border.

According to a state police news release, Arriviello allegedly fired shots into the Jeep while it was on the roadway, hitting both sisters in the legs.

The two victims were flown to a hospital for treatment, and police said their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

After the interstate shooting, Arriviello allegedly drove away from the scene in his Mercedes-Benz, authorities said.

Troopers later located the vehicle about 15 miles from where the gunfire was reported, conducted a traffic stop and arrested Arriviello.

Arriviello is now facing multiple felony counts, including malicious shooting into an occupied vehicle, maliciously causing bodily injury with intent to maim and using a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Officials told Fox News Digital that Arriviello is being held without bond at the New River Valley Regional Jail.

He is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 29.

State police have not said what led to the alleged road rage encounter or whether investigators recovered a firearm from Arriviello’s Mercedes-Benz.

The Jeep’s driver was also cited for reckless driving, but authorities did not identify the driver.

North Carolina Medical Board records show Arriviello has been licensed as an emergency medicine physician in the state since 2010 and has no public disciplinary actions listed against him.

The records list Arriviello as the owner of Family Urgent Care in Monroe.
