Nevada Man Dies After Sudden Emergency on Sequoia Park Trail

A 79-year-old man died Thursday after experiencing an apparent medical emergency while hiking in California’s Sequoia National Park, authorities reportedly said.

The hiker was identified as John Francis Oliver of Henderson, Nevada, a Las Vegas-area city, the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office said, according to Your Central Valley.

Oliver was located on the General Sherman Tree Trail, a roughly one-mile route that draws visitors to the General Sherman Tree, widely recognized as the largest living tree on Earth, the outlet reported, citing the National Park Service.

Emergency crews provided medical assistance at the scene, but Oliver was later pronounced dead inside the park, according to SFGATE.

Officials have not released further information about what may have triggered the medical emergency or the specific circumstances of Oliver’s death. The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office declined to provide additional details “out of respect for the family,” SFGATE reported.

A cause of death has not yet been determined.

The incident came as temperatures in the region climbed into the upper 90s, according to the National Weather Service.

An extreme heat warning was also in effect Thursday for portions of the nearby Mojave Desert and Indian Wells Valley.

Thursday’s death marks the latest in a string of fatal incidents at Sequoia National Park and nearby areas in recent months.

In June, a 17-year-old girl died after slipping into a fast-moving river during her first visit to Sequoia National Park, according to a GoFundMe.

In neighboring Kings Canyon National Park, a San Mateo couple drowned at Roaring River Falls in May, according to Fox 2 San Francisco.

Last summer, NPS also said a local missing hiker, 36, was found dead in Sequoia National Park.

INC News contacted the National Park Services and the Sequoia National Park for more information.
