New York City’s triathlon makes a triumphant return as endurance fanatics brave the Hudson River: Photos

New York City’s only swim-bike-run race returned Saturday, October 10, 2026, under its new name: the Big Apple Triathlon. About 1,300 endurance athletes tackled the demanding route, beginning with a 1,500-meter swim in the Hudson River, followed by a 24.8-mile bike ride along the West Side Highway and a 6.2-mile run through Central Park.

The event, previously known as the New York City Triathlon, dates back to 2001. In recent years, however, its reputation has been affected by an uneven history marked by scheduling problems and disruptive weather.
