Nicholas Caban, Jacob Firestone convicted in Fort Sheridan Beach beating death of Matthew Ascaridis in Highland Park, Illinois

In a pivotal courtroom decision, two young men have been found guilty of the brutal murder of a Highland Park resident, leading to a somber sense of justice nearly four years after the tragic event. On Saturday, a jury convicted Nicholas Caban, 23, and Jacob Firestone, 22, of second-degree murder in the death of Matthew Ascaridis, a devoted husband and father, on September 17, 2022.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office reported that early on the morning of the incident, at approximately 5:15 a.m., the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force was dispatched to Fort Sheridan Beach. There, they discovered the lifeless body of 45-year-old Ascaridis, marking a grim scene that would spark a lengthy legal battle.

Testimony from Ascaridis’s wife painted a vivid picture of the night of September 16, 2022. She recounted how the couple, in the midst of packing for a trip, was disrupted by loud noises outside their home. Despite Ascaridis’s efforts to seek police intervention—making two calls to report the disturbance—he was informed at around 1 a.m. that assistance might be delayed. Determined to address the issue himself, Ascaridis ventured to the beach following his call with an officer.

The officer from the Forest Preserve, who had interacted with Ascaridis that night, testified that he arrived at Fort Sheridan Beach around 2:15 a.m. in response to the noise complaint. However, upon his arrival, he neither saw nor heard any commotion, adding a layer of mystery to the already perplexing case.

Further testimony from law enforcement detailed that at around 5:20 a.m., officers responded to a 911 call from Caban’s residence reporting a confrontation. Upon reaching the scene, they encountered Firestone lying on the front lawn and Caban standing nearby, both men bearing visible injuries yet remaining conscious. This discovery would eventually unravel the tragic events that led to Ascaridis’s untimely death.

Law enforcement officers testified that they responded to Caban’s home around 5:20 a.m. after he called 911 to report an altercation. When officers arrived, they saw Firestone lying on the front yard and Caban standing nearby. Both men appeared injured but conscious.

One investigator told jurors that the Highland Park Police Department later interviewed Caban, who claimed that he and Firestone had a confrontation with Ascaridis and that Ascaridis had fallen on the beach.

Another investigator testified that during an interview at the hospital, Firestone claimed that Ascaridis beat both him and Caban. Prosecutors later argued that Firestone’s claims were inconsistent with medical testimony and DNA evidence recovered from blood found at the scene.

During closing arguments, prosecutors argued that after the brutal beating, the defendants did not call police until hours later. Instead, prosecutors said, the defendants left Ascaridis alone on the beach, unable to move and gasping for air, before he succumbed to his injuries.

The next court date for Firestone and Caban is scheduled for June 18.
