Nick Reiner, charged with murdering his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, will return to court next year as a judge has yet to decide whether the grand jury indictment transcripts should be released publicly.
The 33-year-old appeared Wednesday in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom, where attorneys addressed the dispute over the records.
Reiner and his siblings are seeking to keep the transcripts sealed. They argue that making them public would inflict further trauma on the family and jeopardize Reiner’s right to receive a fair trial.
Media organizations have opposed the request to seal the documents.
The next hearing is scheduled for Jan. 13, 2027. Reiner’s defense team is expected to present information about the extent of media coverage and its potential impact on his ability to receive a fair trial.
Last month, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said prosecutors would not pursue the death penalty against Reiner.
Reiner has been held without bail since December on two counts of first-degree murder.

A conviction could result in a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Hochman has said the trial is unlikely to begin until 2027. He also said prosecutors are prepared to seek a sentence that would keep Reiner imprisoned for the rest of his life.
“At any point in which the defense is ready to proceed, the people are ready to proceed,” Hochman said.
Film director Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner were stabbed to death Dec. 14 at their home in Los Angeles’ upscale Brentwood neighborhood. Nick Reiner, their youngest son, was arrested within hours and charged two days later.
