Southwest Airlines has announced its decision to cease operations at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport come June. This development marks a significant shift in the airline’s strategy in the region.

Flights with Southwest booked beyond June 4 will be automatically canceled, according to a communication sent to customers. Affected passengers will be offered options to either rebook their flights or receive a refund.

“Operating at Chicago O’Hare has proven to be complex,” the airline stated. “We are confident in our ability to serve the Chicagoland area effectively through Chicago Midway Airport. From our established base at Midway, we will continue to offer flights to over 80 destinations, including the 15 routes previously operated from O’Hare. Our commitment to delivering exceptional service to our customers in Chicagoland remains unwavering.”

Southwest Airlines boasts a longstanding presence at Midway Airport, having established roots there 41 years ago.

The airline conducts up to 244 daily departures from Midway, reaching more than 80 nonstop destinations, which encompasses all the routes currently available from O’Hare.

Employees impacted by the transition will have the opportunity to apply for other positions within the Southwest network, including roles at Midway Airport.

The announcement comes amid the Federal Aviation Administration and other airlines discussing reducing flights at O’Hare this summer.

In the letter to customers, Southwest said they are also ending service to Dulles International Airport in the Washington, D.C. area.
