NYC Hate Crimes Surge Under Mamdani Despite Overall Drop in Major Crime

Hate crimes in New York City have climbed this year during Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration, with new NYPD figures showing Jewish New Yorkers have been the targets in more than half of all confirmed incidents.

The 9.4% rise in hate crimes citywide stands in sharp contrast to broader public safety trends, as all seven major crime categories fell across the five boroughs, including record-low levels of murders and shootings, according to NYPD data released Monday.

So far this year, confirmed hate crimes have increased from 329 during the same period last year to 360, including 33 incidents reported in July. Anti-Jewish hate crimes accounted for 56.9% of the total, even though Jewish residents make up about 10% of New York City’s population.

Incidents targeting Jewish New Yorkers are up 8.5% year to date, rising to 205 compared with 189 during the same stretch last year, the department’s statistics show.

At the same time, the city has seen notable declines in other serious crime categories.

Shootings fell 21.3% in July and declined in every borough. The drop is especially stark compared with July 2020, when the city recorded 243 shooting incidents; this July, there were 59, a roughly 75% decrease for the month.

Through the first seven months of the year, shootings were down 7.5% citywide. NYPD data shows 381 shooting incidents so far this year, compared with 771 during the same period in 2020.

Murders also dropped significantly, falling 32.3% in July and 22.8% year to date.

Burglary, auto theft, robbery, grand larceny and felony assault were also down between .4% and 25.3% year to date.

“This summer, the NYPD was called upon to manage an unprecedented series of major and overlapping events, including the NBA Finals, the World Cup, Sail250, and the largest Fourth of July celebration in the country,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch said in a statement.

“Through it all, even as the demands on this department reached historic levels, the men and women of the NYPD delivered double-digit declines in major crime and record lows in violent crime across the city,” she said.

She chalked the record lows of violent crime to “our data-driven precision policing policy and the tireless work of the members of the NYPD whose long hours and dedication continue to make New York City safer.”
