New York City is experiencing a surge of pothole complaints this year, thanks to the aftermath of an especially frigid winter. The dramatic transition from icy roads to a thaw has led to a substantial increase in road damage, prompting an unprecedented number of grievances from residents.
As of March 21, New Yorkers have lodged an astounding 22,887 pothole complaints, a remarkable 119% jump compared to the 10,408 complaints reported during the same timeframe last year. This surge represents the most significant year-over-year rise in pothole reports to the city’s 311 system ever recorded.
Frustrated citizens have taken to social media to voice their dissatisfaction with the city’s roads, sharing images and stories of tire-damaging craters. Some of these potholes are so enormous that they have swallowed traffic cones whole. One particularly notable example was captured in an Instagram video by Alejandro Rolon, an uptown resident, who humorously remarked, “That’s not even a pothole, that’s a manhole,” as he showcased the large pothole on West 131st Street.
The season’s intense snowstorms, followed by cycles of freezing and thawing, have created a pothole epidemic of sorts. In response to the overwhelming number of complaints, the city’s Department of Transportation has implemented “blitz” repair days. These initiatives aim to tackle nearly a week’s worth of repairs in a single day, highlighting the city’s efforts to address the influx of damaged road reports efficiently.

This seasonâs monster snow storms â and resulting freezing and thawing cycles â yielded so many potholes that the city has been addressing the onslaught of calls with âblitzâ repair days, fixing nearly a weeksâ worth of holes in a single day, the city Department of Transportation said.
Saturdayâs blitz alone resulted in 8,000 potholes repaired by 80 crews, with more than 70,000 craters in total filled this year so far, DOT reps said.
âThe high-moisture and thawing conditions continue,â NYC DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn said Friday, âand that means our work is not done.â
This year has been among the worst for potholes on record, according to the city’s public complaint data that dates back to 2004.
The skyrocketing pothole complaint numbers are only behind calls made in 2011 (24,043), 2014 (28,960) and 2015 (27,645) from Jan. 1 to March 21.
Of 2026’s 22,887 pothole complaints, Queens reps more than half — with 10,259 reports.
Brooklyn trails behind with 3,964 calls to date this year, followed by Manhattan (3,042), Staten Island (2,820) and The Bronx (2,681).
Streets with more than a hundred pothole reports filed this year include Union Turnpike, Roosevelt Avenue and Northern, Springfield, Queens, Astoria and Rockaway boulevards.
The cityâs pothole crisis has already turned deadly. A 46-year-old man was killed earlier this month after his stand-up scooter struck a pothole in Ozone Park, Queens.
While potholes are typically filled by city workers within two days on average, more than 4,000 calls to 311 dating back to Jan. 1 are still marked as “open,” according to city data.
“To put it bluntly, itâs been a winter from hell. Especially for our roads,â NYC Council leaders wrote in a letter to Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the DOT, demanding another $46 million to fix the city’s pothole problem.
The request would expand the city’s annual road-resurfacing target by another 200 lane miles â bringing it to 1,350 for the fiscal year beginning in July.
At the same time, some union members have admitted the Big Apple doesnât have enough workers to meet the demand.
âWe just donât have the manpower to do the job in a timely manner,â said Joe Puleo, president of Local 983 of District Council 37, which represents assistant highway repairers.
Puleo told The Post he doesnât expect all the potholes to be filled until June.
âNYC DOT continues to meet or exceed its annual paving goal of 1,100 lane milesâenough to stretch from New York City to Miami,â said DOT spokesperson Mona Bruno.
âWe will continue to work with the City Council to align priorities and resources to deliver for all New Yorkers.â
