A 33-year-old woman who police say was not involved in a Brooklyn street fight died after being struck by a stray bullet early Sunday, collapsing in a bar bathroom as she tried to get help, authorities and sources said.
The fatal shooting unfolded around 2:23 a.m. in Crown Heights, when a dispute involving roughly 100 people erupted outside Ooh La La Lounge near Bergen Street and Howard Avenue, according to the NYPD.
Investigators said a bullet fired during the chaos hit Sofronie Hartzog in the back, while another bystander, a 34-year-old man, was wounded in the abdomen. Police described both victims as unintended targets.
After she was shot, Hartzog made her way inside the lounge and collapsed in a restroom.
Emergency medical workers transported her to One Brooklyn Health-One Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, where doctors were unable to save her.
The second victim was taken to NYC Health and Hospitals/Kings County Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
Police have not yet determined what sparked the large confrontation outside the Crown Heights bar.
Sources said two men who initially matched descriptions of possible shooting suspects were detained, but they were later released after investigators determined they had no role in the gunfire.
Cops are still hunting for the criminals who caused the carnage.
